Midnight Light
I wrote the core of this a few years ago
and have since resurrected and embellished it with new feel. Never
let go of yesterdays ideas. It seems to have a bit of a
Russian/Nordic type of feel - Why Midnight Light?.. This is a
phenomenon that happens near the poles – places like Shetland for
example experience almost 24 hours of light at certain times of the
year. I've seen photo’s of the Lerwick Town Hall at midnight -clear
as day. The Jarls are the chiefs (Earls) of the Viking longships.
The Up Helly-Aa festivals held today in
the Shetland Islands celebrate the warriors killed in battle. Each
year a replica Long Ship is constructed and Torches made from timber
hessian and paraffin wax. At the end of the procession the torches
are thrown on the Long Ship (Drakkar). The burning ship is pushed
out to sea. This “ritual” is followed by singing, dancing, and
drinking (and more) through out the night.
The music is in the key of Em and has
dynamics, with a combination of feel, air, mystery and power. |
