About this song:
Heather ‘n’ Peat
This simple layback tune with slightly
Nordic feel starts and ends with a background sound (recorded on
digital camera) of sea gulls (Sköre) singing in Inverness Scotland.
The tune uses beautiful cross flowing melodies with flute, tin
whistle and orchestra complimented by some fine guitar note runs to
draw you into the feel.
The song is about the fishermen of
Shetland returning home after what were typically long, cold and
often dangerous fishing trips at sea. It’s about warming up -
defrosting by the fire.
For many years the Shetlanders used peat
as a source of fuel in fires. Peat is basically old compressed
heather and grasses. |
Lyrics
Heather ‘n’ Peat will keep you warm
with laughter and jest by the fire light
Whisky and Rum will keep you young
with tales of fair winds and good fortunes
Come in from the cold, the snow and the
sleet
By the warm fire of Heather ‘n’ Peat
Come gather ‘round, come all if you please
Shake off – thaw out that sea fairing freeze
Heather 'n' Peat
will keep you warm
with memories and tears by the fire light
Whisky and Rum will keep you strong
with tales of foul winds and misfortunes
Come in from the cold, the snow and the
sleet
By the warm fire of Heather ‘n’ Peat
Come gather ‘round, come all if you please
Shake off – thaw out that sea fairing freeze
Put another log on the fire - make the
flames reach the sky
Mourn for the widows - of boy and men born
die
Put another log on the fire - make the
flames reach the sky
Drink to the Sköre -
that lead lucky home and dry
Put another log on the
fire - make the flames feel the heat
These are the people -
Wild oceans can not defeat
Put another log on the
fire - make the flames feel the heat
Warm to the fire - of
Heather 'n' Peat
- Got to chill out by
the fire
