About this song:
Scalloway
The song basically has two parts. The
track starts and ends with thunder and rain from a storm that I
recorded on the 11th November 2006. The intro blends into clear
fresh lead guitar and nice rotating chords. You may notice the sound
of a bottle of whiskey being opened and a nip being poured into a
glass, signifying the start of part two of the song. (I enjoyed that
nip so much I had to re-record it several times).
The second part has an epic feel, laced
with lyrics of leaving the homeland and vowing to return, then
crashes into a solid musical ending.
Scalloway was once the main town (burgh)
in the Shetlands. Some years ago now Lerwick became the burgh of the
Shetlands. Scalloway and Lerwick are only about 4 miles apart -
roughly an hours quick walk, (probably closer to 5 miles as the crow
flies, 9 miles by road, but who's counting?).
Over the years many Shetlanders have
left their home, ventured, settled and integrated into other
cultures throughout the world (much like the Vikings of old but with
out the battles). Never the less, the island home is always close at
heart. The same story rings true for most that migrate regardless of
where you are from. Even though we are all children of adventurers
and freedom seekers, and even though we are content in this land we
call home, there seems to be a spiritual connection to that land far
away. |
Lyrics
Island of my endless dream,
You’re the only one I seem
to think about,
to dream about.
All the colours in my life,
Fading into black and white
No shades of grey,
Since we went away.
It’s only four miles, only one hour away
It’s only four miles, only one hour away
Only four miles – Lerwick to Scalloway
Only one hour – Lerwick to Scalloway
Fare thee well to my island
Fare thee well to my homeland
Fare thee well to my darlin'
We will meet again someday soon
